Athletic Training Education Programs

Dear Athletic Training Program Director:

On behalf of the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Brace Technologists (NBCOBT), we would like to welcome your institution’s participation to further the career advancement for athletic trainers in orthopedics.  The NBCOBT invites your Athletic Training Program to be one of the first nationally recognized as an ASOP/NBCOBT Registered Orthopedic Technologist (ROT) / Orthopedic Brace Technologist (OBT) School.

As you aware from the clinical sessions at previous NATA Annual Meetings and the recent  Las Vegas meeting workshops, the orthopedic extender position for the athletic trainer continues to be a growth opportunity within the profession.  In today’s economy, the ASOP/NBCOBT partnership is introducing an opportunity to increase the marketability of your AT Program graduates in the workplace.  For example, the ATC as an orthopedic extender combined with the ROT/OBT credential establishes a revenue generating source for the physician. Ultimately, this value added component maintains their economic worth to the orthopedic practice.   Just complete the enclosed form and fax back to 727-231-8385.  Dr. Keith Vanic, PhD, ATC, ROT, OBT will contact you.

With that said, here are some ROT/OBT School highlights and program benefits for your AT Program:

  • NO workshop travel expenses incurred by faculty or students
  • Current faculty may teach OBT curriculum on site at YOUR institution
  • ALL instructional materials provided to the teaching faculty (i.e., PowerPoint, competency checklist AND braces/appliances etc)
  • Additional credentialing and CEUs available for professional development
  • Institutional discounts for credentialing examination
  • And much MUCH MORE….

ASOP and the NBCOBT have worked diligently alongside your ATC colleagues to ensure our program curriculum aligns with the career objectives for the athletic trainer.  In other words, built by athletic trainers for athletic trainers!  The ASOP/NBCOBT recognizes the value of the athletic trainer within the orthopedic setting and we welcome the opportunity to work with your faculty and students in the near future.

We would gladly connect you with other athletic training programs that have become ASOP/NBCOBT recognized schools.  Please see attachments for application and other resource materials.  If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 727-394-1700 or

Charles Barocas, CO
NBCOBT Director
